Amateur kits fail when people chase “more megapixels” instead of controlling light and distance. A sharp phone file with muddy edges still fails Amazon and looks cheap on Shopify color blocks.

• White foam board or poster paper (A2 or larger)
• Tape or a simple clamp to curve the sweep
• Diffuse daylight from a window, or two soft LED panels (5600K-ish if you mix lights)
• Optional light tent for reflective bottles and cosmetics
• Cheap table tripod or stable stack of books for consistent framing
• Neutral gray card if you care about white-balance across sessions

Skip colored poster paper for catalog heroes—color spill stains packaging edges and becomes halos after cutout.

Assembly in ten minutes

Curve the paper from the horizontal surface up the back wall without hard creases. Place the product mid-sweep with 15–20 cm of empty paper behind it so contact shadows soften. Shoot roughly parallel to the table to minimize keystone distortion on boxes. Fill the frame enough that you are not cropping extreme empty space later, but leave margin for marketplace “product fills ~85%” rules after cutout.

Turn off decorative room LEDs that cast green/magenta. One clean key + soft fill beats five mixed lamps.

Lighting mistakes that ruin masks

• Single hard flash creating a dark shadow attached to the product edge
• Colored walls reflecting onto white packaging
• Overexposed backdrop clipping to pure white while the product is also white—segmentation loses the silhouette
• Mixed color temperatures that make later batches look unrelated
• Handheld shake on small text labels

If you see a hard triangular shadow glued to the base, raise the key light or add fill before you open any editor.

Phone camera settings that help

Lock exposure so the backdrop is bright but not nuked. Tap to focus on the label plane. Prefer the highest quality still setting; avoid “document” modes that aggressively sharpen and crush gradients. Shoot a second frame slightly underexposed if highlights on gloss are clipping—recovering texture is easier than inventing it.

Transfer files via cable or high-quality cloud sync. Messaging-app compression is a silent catalog killer.

After capture: local background removal

Import JPG or PNG into nobg.eu, run local AI segmentation, inspect edges at full zoom, export transparent PNG. Composite on white for Amazon-style mains or keep alpha for Shopify heroes and ads. Upgrade to a tent, second light, or APS-C camera when volume exceeds what a foam board day can deliver—or when reflective sets refuse to behave—not because a blog said pros only use studio strobes.
